Summersend
Title: Designer/Producer
Location: Carnegie Mellon University
Team: CROW Productions
Date: Spring 2004
This independent
study grew out of my work on character
and emotion in games. Along with 5 other students,
I decided to try out some of our ideas in an actual
game design and prototype. Over the course of a semester,
we were able to detail a rich fairytale world through
background writing and concept art. We also developed
a working prototype demo that showed off our design
of dynamic, emotional interaction.

Our game
concept, Summersend, is based around
the ideas of choice and consequence. At a systemic level,
a player's choice will dynamically affect the options
they have available and the story which they experience.
Theatrical AI enables dramatic gameplay centered on
relationships and emotions rather than strength and
strategy.

As
a Designer on this project, I...
- ...developed
and oversaw the implementation of a character data
structure that represents emotional states and relationships.
- ...designed
an emergent story framework based on techniques from
improvisational theater.
- ...created
a small cast of interesting characters for the prototype.
- ...wrote
dialogue and scenarios for our prototype.
- ...developed
high concept pitch materials.
- ...documented
our progress.
As
the Producer for this project, I...
- ...assigned
tasks and monitored progress.
- ...coordinated
the efforts of 2 artists, 2 programmers, and 1 other
designer.
- ...scheduled
and led team meetings.
