Mars Exchange
Live (MEL) was an attempt to bring the actual scientific
exploration of Mars to the public. Working alongside
two human computer interaction graduate students, I
applied game design principles to design a fun yet educational
application. Based on the existing Eventscope
program, MEL would allow explorers (anyone with an Internet
connection) to traverse a virtual Mars constructed from
data straight out of NASA missions (the Mars Orbital
Camera, the Mars Exploration Rovers, for example).

Inspired
in part by massively multiplayer online games, MEL is
unique as an educational tool in its shared nature.
Explorers would traverse a Mars inhabited by many other
explorers, scientists and tourists. Thus students would
have an opportunity to discuss issues with NASA scientists
along with amateur scientists and other students.
As
a Designer on this project, I...
- ...mocked-up
interface designs.
- ...brainstormed
and developed interactions.
- ...researched
interactive educational frameworks.
- ...documented
our designs.
